With all the moving across borders since the age of 19, I have accumulated a stack of identity documents: ID cards, passports, visas, and driver's licenses. Like a suit, they seem to package me as a globetrotter. While that is true, these IDs are the physical evidence of my struggle with immigration and bureaucracy. I ask myself at this point, am I Chinese, Dutch or American? What will my next ID/identity be? Who's the person underneath? By shedding this “packaging”, I seek liberation of the self.
